The State of the Military and Defenses in 1700 In 1700 Governor Zuniga commanded 323 men, scattered in various outposts throughout Florida. A captain, executive officer, sergeant, drummer, piper, page, and four squad captains formed the nucleus of each of the three infantry companies assigned to the province. A sergeant major—the governor’s second-in-command—a lieutenant of the fort, four adjutants, an armorer, a blacksmith, barber, and pharmacist AN262 served at Fort San Marcos and received their salaries from the military payroll. Small complements of artillerymen and sailors supported the three infantry companies. (Tepaske GSF)
