Beginning in 1640, paper stamped with the royal coat-of-arms (papel sellado) was required for legal documents in the Indies. AN120 A governor’s interim appointment, for instance, must be written up on 24-reale paper for the first page and 1-reale for each page thereafter. Ordinary notarized documents began on 6-reale paper. Indians and indigents were entitled to use paper costing ¼-reale, or omit the stamp altogether. AN121 Perhaps this was why St. Augustine notaries seldom bothered to keep a supply of stamped paper, although when they used the unstamped they were supposed to collect an equivalent fee.
