The arrival of the Yamasees brought about a shuffling of village sites. A census made by cavalry captain Joseph Primo de Rivera in 1717 showed 946 natives living within 5 leagues of St. Augustine in 10 pueblos, 2 of which were identified as "Ibaja." "Santa Catharina de Guale," with Domingo Gaina as doctrinero, don Alonso de la Cruz as principal cacique, 8 principales, and a total of 18 "infieles agregados," was the larger of the two pueblos, with 49 men, 46 women, 18 boys, and 12 girls, making a total of 125 inhabitants. The other pueblo of "the Ibaja tongue and nation" was Tolomato, with 64 people, all Christian. AN303 (Bushnell SS)
