There was good reason for the truculence of the Talapuses and Uchizes. With the English settlement of Georgia in 1733, James Oglethorpe began a program designed to pamper the Indians and to win them over to his side. Oglethorpe’s agents showerd the Lower Creeks and other tribes in the Southeast with gifts and favors and even went so far as to take the Uchize chief Chamachichi to London.
