In 1740 after the Stono Rebellion, teh colonial government officially resumed responsibility for compensating teh masters of executed Negroes.
Note: Compensation was not paid upon slaves guilty of murder or "taken in actual rebellion."
(Wood BM 280)
...in the general tighenting of controls which followed the Stono Uprising, the government assumed all expenses for the corporal punishment of criminal slaves, and also any "other charges for keeping and maintaining such slaves, as are allowed to teh warden of the work house in Charlestown."
(Wood BM 281)
In 1740 SC gave official sanction to this practice [of having slaves administer punishments] by empowering constables to force Negroes into inflicting corporal punishment on other slaves, so that "no delay may happen in causing execution to be done."
Note: Refusal could bring 20 lashes, and compliance brought a 5-shilling reward.
