Benavides accused his temporary curate of adultery with a married womanedit

Two months later Benavides accused his curate of adultery with a married woman of Saint Augustine, a charge supported by many residents of the town. [Note 60: gov to king 11/10/1722; vecinos de San Agustin to king 11/23/1722] For the bishop of Cuba these new charges were particularly unsettling. Lodares Cota was a close friend, who morals had always been impeccable. Benavides, in the opinion of the Cuban prelate, had contrived the charges against the curate. [Note 61: king to bishop of Cuba 12/23/1724. This dispatch cites the bishop’s letter of 12/22/1722, defending Lodares.] AN179 (Tepaske GSF)
