Gov Moral wanted situado in cash in order to sell his own illicit trade goodsedit

In addition [to bringing in Canary Islanders] the governor wanted to revive Zuniga’s scheme of obtaining the entire subsidy in hard money. If Florida cold get its yearly grant in specie, he claimed he could secure supplies at lower prices in Havana, Campeche, and Vera Cruz, breaking the monopoly of Puebla merchants, who charged such exorbitant prices to his situadista. [Note: gov to king 6/30/1734] ...Apparently, therefore, Moral hoped to get the situado entirely in hard money to stimulate [his illicit] trade further and to get cheaper, higher quality goods from the Carolinians. Have Poppy act like these are the good days, and tell outlandish (but true) stories of how bad they had it when he was a kid. For example, he can talk about his pet dog or cat, then admit the family had to eat it; like Yvette Coons having to eat her pet rooster. Poppy tells the Gonzales children, "You don't know how good you have it."
