The Spanish friars held a separate chapter meeting at Pocotalaca
The alliance between the Creoles and the governor was more than the Spanish faction could bear. In the fall of 1735 the peninsulars completely broke with their Creole oppressors when they held their own separate chapter election. ...Bitter and resentful, the Spanish faction met surreptitiously four days later on September 21 at Pocotalaca for its own chapter election. Here they annulled the early election and voted for a new conventual leader, Antonio Navarro. News of the second chapter, held without Moral’s knowledge, drove the governor into a fury. When he discovered what had occurred at Pocotalaca, he angrily ordered the seizure of all those who had participated in the meeting there. With a real crisis threatening, Auxiliary Bishop Buenaventura intervened to prevent it. Learning of Moral’s plan through an informer AN363, Buenaventura rushed to the governor’s residence to intercede on behalf of the Spanish faction. In the discussion that followed the bishop pointed out that seizure of the Spanish friars would do irreparable harm to the floundering mission program, create a permanent rift in the order, and demoralize both the Indians and the colonists. What else was said is not clear, but the governor finally yielded to the bishop and did not molest the Spanish friars.
