In 1738 we find the number of Hitchiti men placed at 60,2 in 1750 at only 15,2 and in 1760 at 50.10 In 1761 it was estimated that they had 40 hunters,11 and in 1772 Taitt says there were "about 90 gunmen." Young gives the population of the Fowl Towns, occupied largely by Hitchiti Indians, as 300 in 1821. 1S In 1832 they are credited, including a branch village, with a population of 381, besides 20 negro slaves.14 Though still fairly numerous they are more or less confounded with other groups speaking a similar language.
