Oglethorpe took over Pupo and Picolata
In 1740 these sporadic border forays yielded to a major war between Florida and Georgia. AN183 In January Oglethorpe led a band of 200 Creek, Chickasaw, and Uchize Indians and a lesser number of Highland Rangers up the Saint John’s to Fort Pupo and Picolata, now the favorite target of English raiders. Here the Georgians won a major victory. Oglethorpe’s force killed 12 Spanish infantrymen and sent the remainder of the two small garrisons scurrying back to Saint Augustine in a headlong retreat. To secure his foothold in the heart of Spanish territory, Oglethorpe left a small force at Pupo and Picolata under a trusted officer, Captain Hugh Mackay.
